Training, learning and development for the voluntary sector

Developing Our Workforce

GCVS was first established as an SVQ centre over 20 years ago. Over the years, and responding to demand from the third sector, we now offer a range of training courses to suit the needs of our community, across Scotland.

Our SVQs and PDAs are work based qualifications which recognise the skills, experience and practice required to carry out a role to the nationally recognised standard. Explore our full range of awards and levels below. Or please contact us on 0141 332 2444 or by email at svq@gcvs.org.uk to discuss your needs.

We continually develop and deliver a dynamic training and learning programme, designed to meet the needs of the voluntary sector.

Why Choose an SVQ?

An SVQ is not just about demonstrating knowledge – it forces candidates to examine what they do, why they do it and how they do it.

The only entry requirement is that the candidate be employed or volunteering in a position that allows them to gather the appropriate evidence needed. There are no formal tests or exams. SVQs are comprised of mandatory and optional units which are selected based on the roles and responsibilities of your candidate. View our full course guide below.

More about SVQs

An SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) is a work based qualification which demonstrates that your candidate has the skills, experience and practice to carry out their role to a nationally recognised standard.

Each SVQ is comprised of mandatory units combined with a number of optional units which are selected based on the roles and responsibilities of your candidate.

The only entry requirement for an SVQ is that the candidate be employed or volunteering in a position that allows them to gather the appropriate evidence for the level of award being undertaken. There are no formal tests or exams. Instead, progression is on the basis of evidence obtained in a variety of ways but generally, it includes:

  • a piece of reflective writing;
  • our assessor carrying out an observation of the candidate completing a task;
  • the candidate producing evidence of work such as copies of emails, action plans, minutes of meetings etc.

Our assessors work with candidates to develop assessment plans which lay out how they can fulfil the evidence requirements for each unit. The candidate is then free to work on each of the plans between appointments with their assessor.

We find that candidates progress better with consistent, regular efforts towards their SVQ so our assessors will be in touch on a regular basis to monitor progress and to offer feedback.

Everyone has a different working style but, on average, 2-3 hours per week is a good indication of the minimum level of commitment expected.

PAYMENT
Many of our awards are eligible for SAAS funding which means that candidates, who earn up to £25,000 pa, may be able to apply for a grant which will cover part of the costs. There is an application process and if successful, the grant will be paid directly to GCVS as the training provider.
Candidates or their employers are invoiced following their induction. If candidates are paying for their SVQ themselves, we can offer the option to settle the invoice in monthly instalments over 10 payments.

Employability

Our SQA accredited Employability Award is designed to prepare candidates to enter the world of work. It aims to enable people to be successful in making, and sustaining, the transition from non-work environments into employment. No prior knowledge or qualifications are required for this award which is available at SCQF levels 3 and 4. Download our Leaflet to find out more.
