Developing Numeracy For the Workplace
We are pleased to assist those in our community with tools and opportunities to boost their employability. Our funded Numeracy Core Skills course allows learners to improve their practical numeracy skills and provides a recognised qualification.
The Numeracy Core Skill at SCQF 5 is one of 5 core skills considered ‘key to learning and working in today’s world.’ Rather than concentrate on complex mathematical ideas and concepts, this course aims to develop tools that are useful in daily life. It can help widen access to the jobs market and support the hardest-to-reach learners.
‘Core Skills enable people to flexibly put their knowledge, skills and understanding into action, adapting them to new situations. Core Skills apply to a wide range of contexts in education and training, in life, and work.’
What’s Involved?
This fully funded opportunity is ideal for anyone lacking Numeracy as a Core Skill. The only restriction is that applicants should be 19 or over.
The course can be taken online in one half-day session or in person at our Glasgow Albany Centre. Regular dates are now available to complete the course at a time that suits you. Dates for the first 3 online sessions include:
- 19th October 2023 – 9.30am to 1.30pm
- 16th November 2023 – 9.30am to 1.30pm
- 13th December 2023 – 12.30pm to 4.30pm
If you have a group of staff or volunteers who could benefit from this course, please get in touch, and we would be happy to discuss providing a session at your workplace.
Please apply online, or download our Registration Form and email your completed form to multiply@gcvs.org.uk

Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for anyone who is held back from applying for specific jobs because of a lack of numeracy skills or is just looking to add to their skills to help them access wider employment opportunities. This includes those who have never been employed and can help provide confidence and skills to take the first steps.
I hated Maths at school – why is this different?
This is about using numeracy for day-to-day activities – how to problem solve and use numbers and calculations in your daily life.
Is this the same as Nat 5 or standard grade?
No – Core skills sit alongside full academic qualifications and are all about the practical application of skills – Numeracy, Communication etc.
I did Maths at school – won’t I already have this qualification?
You may do – we will check with SQA to see if you already hold the Core Skill in Numeracy at SCQF 5. You may have already achieved this qualification if you have previously completed a Modern Apprenticeship in Scotland. If you were educated in Scotland prior to 2000 or educated elsewhere, it is probable you won’t have the core skill already and will benefit from this training.
How can this benefit me?
This will give you a recognised qualification in Numeracy which could help you gain employment or improve your CV.
Do you get a certificate?
You will get a digital certificate on completion of the course from GCVS. Your SQA profile will be updated to show achievement of the Numeracy core skill SCQF 5. You can also create an account at MySQA to see these results and get printable copies.
How long does the course last?
There are 2 options – most people will complete the course in a 1/2 day online session. There will also be face-to-face full-day courses running in The Albany Centre. Dates to be confirmed.
