Plans to expand childcare and introduce free meals for all of Scotland’s P1 to P3 were announced by the Scottish Government last week.  The plans are included in a 2 year £114m support package for children and young people, which will expand free childcare provision to 2 year olds from all workless households from August 2014 and to 15,400 children from families on certain benefits by August 2015.   Included in the plans is a £3.5 million package of support for training to grow Scotland’s childcare workforce by 2000 in 2014/15 and to provide training and professional development across the sector.

According to the Scottish Government’s own research, plans to increase affordable childcare are predicted to benefit the economy by up to £1.2bn by removing one of the key barriers to labour market participation for women.
