The Trussel Trust has revealed that use of four of their food banks in Glasgow has shot up by almost 600% over the last year. The previous 12 months saw 2564 people in need of emergency food aid, but this year 14,781 people, including 2,800 children have used their service. The true number of people requiring assistance is likely to be far higher, as additional food banks have developed across the city in response to growing need.
Benefit problems, including sanctions and delays, continue to account for the highest proportion of people seeking help across Scotland, according to the Trusts’s Ewan Gurr. Glasgow continues to be the city with the highest number of referrals.
