Demonstrating Success
(This course is being run jointly with SCVO)

Cost: £108 members, £165 non-members

Aim:
Demonstrating Success is a one-day course designed to help those new to the task of demonstrating how their organisation or project is meeting its stated aims or achieving intended outcomes and impact.

The course will cover:

  • Navigating the ‘fog of confusion' - clarifying terminology
  • Linking strategy, monitoring and evaluation and outcomes/impact.
  • An outline of the LEAP model
  • Outputs v outcomes
  • Why bother assessing outcomes and impact?
  • Is there a difference between outcomes and impact?
  • Pros and cons for the organisation/project and others of attempting to assess and demonstrate impact
  • Devising indicators and measures
  • Mapping Impact/Outcomes
  • The lively issue of ‘deadweight'
  • Choosing Assessment and Measurement Tools - A Five Step Approach

Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be able to explain common terms
  • Be able to explain the links between strategic plans, monitoring and evaluation and outcomes/impact.
  • Be able to explain the challenges and benefits to their organisation/project and others of assessing impact.
  • Have considered what is involved in devising indicators and measures and had practice in doing this.
  • Understand what is meant by impact/outcome mapping and have experience of drawing up a basic map
  • Be able to explain how ‘deadweight' influences the assessment and reporting of outcomes and impacts
  • Be familiar with a simple approach to choosing assessment methods and tools for assessing outcomes/impact

Situations/tasks that the learning from this course will be useful for:

  • It will be particularly useful to those who are required to produce formal reports on the effectiveness of a project to their board of management or to funding agencies and who have little previous experience of doing this.
