Scottish Third Sector Report Published

OSCR published their analysis of Scottish Charities this week.  The report contains figures for the number of charities across the country, regional variations in funding, charities per head of population and a number of other measures of interest to the sector. 

The findings place Glasgow 12th for the amount of money received in government funding, behind Edinburgh in 9th place.  Glasgow is 17th for the number of charities per head of population, behind Edinburgh at 9th and the Shetland Islands, which is in first place with a whopping 128 charities per 10,000 of population. 

Their report coincides with analysis of the most recent Labour Force Survey by TSRC, NCVO and Skills – Third Sector, which has found that there has been loss of 70,000 jobs throughout the sector, a drop of 9% since 2010, while Median wages in the sector have fallen by 3%. Wages have risen in both the public and private sector over the period and job losses have been less severe. 12,000 of jobs lost have been in Scotland.

OSCR Report, Key Points for Glasgow:

  • Glasgow City is placed 17th for number of charities per 10,000 of population (40) - of population, whereas Edinburgh City is placed 9th (59).  Shetland Islands have the highest at 128.
  • Shetland Islands, Glasgow City and Inverclyde had the highest charity income per 10,000 of population. Circa £12,000 for Glasgow but around £22,000 for Shetland
  • The sector in Glasgow receives 31% of their income through government funding and just over 5% in donations (12th place), while Edinburgh receives 38% in government funding and around 12% in donations (8th place)
  • Glasgow Housing Association is the largest social landlord in Scotland
  • The Church of Scotland is the largest charity in Scotland with Glasgow Culture and Sport in second place.
  • There are around 2400 charities working in Glasgow City.
  • 506 new charities have been registered in Glasgow since April 2006
  • Glasgow has the highest proportion of charities working to advance equality and diversity
  • Funding is the biggest concern across the sector in Scotland.
