A new report from the Registrar General for Scotland tells us that while life expectancy is continuing to rise across Scotland as a whole, people in Glasgow have the lowest life expectancy in the UK.
Statistics from 2004-2006 and 2008-2010, report that men living in Glasgow live to an average age of only 71 while the average for women is 78. The average life expectancy for Scotland as a whole was 75 for men and 80 for women.
These figures contrast starkly with average life expectancy of 85 for men and 87 for women in the highest UK areas - Kensington and Chelsea in London.
Researchers recognise that: "although a substantial proportion of these differences can be accounted for by the distinct socio-economic profile of the area, there are aspects of health which transcend the socio-economic explanation and seem to represent a 'Glasgow effect'."
The Glasgow Centre for Population Health published a briefing last year that looks to explain the 'Glasgow Effect'.
