The UK Government Has Created A 'Funding Crisis For Charities', Says the TUC . Commenting on research recently published by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) which reveals charities are facing cuts totalling nearly £3 billion over the next five years due to government spending cuts, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
'This authoritative research shows that for all the warm words about the big society, the government has created a funding crisis for charities with many scaling back or cutting services altogether.
'With the public sector shrinking and voluntary groups focusing on survival rather than expansion, private companies are eyeing up the huge profits to be made from running our public services.'
SCVO, however, has pointed out that should the cuts to Scotland’s block grant be passed on to the third sector by the Scottish Government and local authorities, NCVO’s figure of £20.4m in cuts for Scotland, would be a serious underestimation and a figure of over £200m would be closer to the mark. Chief Executive, Martin Syme, is confident, however, that the Scottish Government remains committed to the third sector and will continue to invest in, and co-operate, with the sector in Scotland, as he writes in ‘A time to appreciate what we have’, a reflection on the recent rioting in England and the UK Government’s response.
