Several of Glasgow's inner-city areas are to get a long overdue facelift after tens of millions of pounds was released for the overhaul of deprived neighbourhoods and brownfield sites.
This large regeneration project will be keenly felt in Laurieston district south of the River Clyde, where the construction of 800 homes, shops and other business premises is taking place. Such development of this area has long been an aspiration but has now become possible with the demolition of several tower blocks in the Gorbals area of the city.
The five year project will see a further 700 residential properties constructed further down the line, with similar schemes planned for Maryhill and the Gallowgate.
The “Transformational Regeneration Areas” (TRAs), involving the Glasgow city Council, Scottish Government, Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and community housing associations, will eventually extend to other Glasgow areas including East Govan/Ibrox, North Toryglen, Red Road, Sighthill and Shawbridge, with a combined capital spend, including private sector investment, expected to exceed £1 billion in the next decade.
Liz Cameron, the Council's political head of development and regeneration said;
"If approved the appointment of a private sector development partner to create a new residential development in Laurieston will enable the rebirth of the Gorbals to finally be completed."
