The Government has reduced Glasgow Council’s budget by 3.6 per cent, resulting in Glasgow having to make a further £13.5 million of cuts, higher than any other council in Scotland. Finance settlements for all Scottish local authorities have been outlined in a Scottish Government finance circular.
The shock move has been described as a “dagger through the heart”’ of the city by Glasgow council leader Gordon Matheson. He admitted it would be, “back to the drawing board”, in terms of finding extra cuts on top of the £43 million already planned. Mr Matheson expressed his fury at his decision, stating, “It is clear the Scottish Government cares nothing for Glasgow”.
Gordon Matheson had previously produced a draft budget based on 2.6 per cent cuts, which notably saw cuts to the voluntary sector approaching £3 million, this further reduction of the budget means the council now face the prospect of making even more unpopular cuts.
