In the agenda papers for this week’s Executive Committee, Glasgow City Council is tabling a proposal for a £586,000 Mass Automated Cycle Hire (M.A.C.H) Scheme.
If the proposal is successful, the scheme will allow cyclists to hire bicycles at several locations in the city. The move follows Glasgow’s Strategic Plan for Cycling, published in 2010, and Scotland’s plan to ensure that 10% of all journeys in Scotland will be taken on bike.
A number of infrastructure projects have been underway to promote cycling in the city in recent years, including new cycle paths, a mountain bike trail and the installation of cycle racks.
The scheme will operate on a limited basis in advance of the Commonwealth Games in 2014, which will thereafter be extended, with up to 400 bicycles on offer.
