A new public bike hire scheme has launched in Glasgow, a venture which will see 400 bikes available for hire in 31 locations across the city. The Nextbite Hire Scheme, supported by Glasgow Bike Station, will allow members of the public to rent a bike for 30 minutes for £1, or buy an annual subscription for £60 to receive cheaper rates for regular users. Bikes can be taken out and then returned to any of the 31cycle points in the city.
The venture, which is supported by Glasgow City Council, follows Glasgow’s Strategic Plan for Cycling, which was published in 2010, and Scottish Government plans to ensure that 10% of all journeys in Scotland will be taken by bike.
A number of infrastructure projects have been underway to promote cycling in the city in recent years, including new cycle paths, a mountain bike trail and the installation of cycle racks in several locations.
