According to this week’s Daily Record, 1650 older people have cancelled their Telecare service with the Council since the introduction of a £3 weekly fee.

Vulnerable service users can use the system to call for assistance in an emergency, meaning that it is considered an essential lifeline for many older people, who often have complex medical problems, allowing them to remain in their own homes and communities.

The introduction of the fee caused controversy when it was announced in October last year, causing concern that those who would need the service most would suffer and that the charges would put the poorest pensioners off accessing the service in the first place

The Council have stated that there may be financial help available if service users struggle to pay for the service.
