The recently announced changes to the Job Retention scheme are very significant for third sector organisations.
The biggest changes are employers having to cover costs of National Insurance and pension contributions, a reduction in the percentage contributions paid by HMRC and the scheme closing completely on 31st October. It is also being closed to new entrants from 30th June. This means that charities must seek to furlough any colleagues for the first time by 10th June at latest, to ensure they are covered by the scheme in future. See here for more details.
As employers are expected to contribute to the scheme going forward, voluntary organisations will need to carry out a budget analysis to ensure staff costs can be met, with the organisation remaining financially viable.
Remember, if any staff member has more than two years’ continuous service, they have a right to redundancy and up to 12weeks’ notice salary – this needs to be included in the calculations as well as redundancy pay and annual leave.
If your organisation is potentially facing financial difficulties, advice on restructure and redundancy needs to be take sooner rather than later.
GCVS has been working with organisations across the City and we can help you in a number of ways:
- If you use our payroll services, colleagues will support you with claiming furlough and all that this entails;
- The Post Lockdown Pack aims to provide information and templates to help your organisation support staff and service users, and to ensure that day to day operations are COVID assured. Since the launch of the pack, we have had lots of orders for it and received positive feedback about its usefulness. It will continue to be updated regularly as and when lockdown eases and new law and best practice are announced;
- Training and development – we are updating existing training and creating new sessions to respond to the impact of the COVID pandemic. From data protection to lone working, all training on offer can be accessed via our Eventbrite pages;
- Funding advice – our First Tuesday funding sessions are all online and we’re offering one to one funding surgeries.
