As of 1 October 2013, charities will be required to claim Gift Aid using Charities Online.  A transitional period has been in effect since March, and paper R68i forms will no longer be accepted for claims.

The online service, introduced by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) aims to make claiming gift aid repayments faster for charities and sports clubs. Online claims should get paid within three days.

Gift Aid is a way for charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs to increase the value of monetary donations from UK taxpayers by claiming back the basic rate tax paid by the donor. It can increase the value of donations by a quarter at no extra cost to the donor. Gift Aid is worth nearly £1 billion a year to charities and their donors.

To date, only a quarter of UK charities have signed up to use Charities Online and several large charities have reported that they are not ready for the move to the online system.  There are also concerns that smaller charities are unaware of the impending changes or even of the availability of Gift Aid and that more needs to be done to raise awareness of the benefits of the scheme among charities and donors.
