Thousands of people could be in line for refunds following news that the application of the bedroom tax has wrongly included people who have lived in their properties for over 17 years.

Those who have had tenancies for this period are exempt from the tax, however, as many as 40,000 people across the UK may have been wrongly told that they were subject to it, according to housing experts.

Margaret Burgess, MSP urged those who believe they may have been wrongly charged to contact their local authority and expressed disappointment that the DWP cannot answer to the full extent of the problem yet.
